چکیده

Introduction: The purpose of this study was to compare body composition assessed by bioimpedance analysis (BIA) against deuterium dilution (D2O) techniques. Methods: This study was conducted on 215 young Syrian adults. Total body water (TBW), fat free mass (FFM) and fat mass (FM) compartments were calculated from the measurements of resistance made at 50 kHZ using the formula provided by the instrument manufacturer (Bodystat) and D2O equation. Bland-Altman plot analysis was used to compare methods, and linear regression analysis were performed to detect the relation between the variables (R2 = 0.81). Results: Percentage of body fat derived from BIA (16.2 ±7.3%) and D2O technique (21.32±6.42%) were significantly different (p<0.001). BIA body composition assessments provided good relative agreement with the selected criterion method of D2O as indicated by high correlation coefficients (r=0.91). Conclusion: When compared with D2O, BIA overestimated TBW and FFM, and underestimatd FM (P<0.001) in young adults (-5.2%; -3.4 kg).

Body Composition Comparisons by Age Groups in Hungarian Adults Comparaciones de Composición Corporal en Grupos Etarios de Adultos Húngaros

The assessment of body composition provides a basis for evaluating changes in adults as they age. If the fat content is shown to be too high, intervention to reduce storage fat is warranted. The purpose of this paper is to report differences in body composition in men and women across three age groups (young, middle aged, older) to describe potential changes in both fat and muscularity. In addi...

Triacylglycerols and body fat mass are possible independent predictors of C3 in apparently healthy young Brazilian adults.

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the association between serum concentrations of complement factor-3 (C3) with anthropometric, biochemical, and lifestyle features in healthy young adults. METHODS From 157 young healthy adults 18 to 35 y old, anthropometric measurements and body composition, systolic and diastolic blood pressures, and lifestyle data were collected and analyzed. Blood samples were collect...

Weak effect of trans-10, cis-12-conjugated linoleic acid on body fat accumulation in adult hamsters.

It has been proposed that young animals and subjects are more responsive to conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) than the adults. Nevertheless, there is very little information concerning the effectiveness of CLA in adult animals. In the present study we aimed to explore the effects of trans-10, cis-12-CLA on body fat accumulation in adult hamsters, as well as on some of the molecular mechanisms desc...

Association of Peripheral Total and Differential Leukocyte Counts with Obesity-Related Complications in Young Adults

OBJECTIVE Obesity has been demonstrated to be associated with elevated leukocytes in adults and children. This study assessed the associations between peripheral total and differential leukocyte counts and obesity-related complications in young adults. METHODS 12 obese (median age 21.5 (range 19-28) years, median BMI 35.7 (range 32.0-44.9) kg/m(2)) and 11 normal (median age 23 (range 18-27) y...

Comparison of Bioelectrical Impedance and Skinfolds with Hydrodensitometry in the Assessment of Body Composition in Healthy Young Adults

Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) is a widely used method for estimating body composition, yet issues concerning its validity persist in the literature. The purpose of this study was to validate percentage of body fat (BF) values estimated from BIA and skinfold (SF) with those obtained from hydrodensitometry (HD). Percent BF values measured via hand-to-hand BIA (BIAH), foot-to-foot BIA (BI...
